I enjoy your football column esp. your comments on the Alabama game. They are still working out the kinks but I think Bama is back.

USC v UW football

Sark wants this one to show USC he has the right stuff. I predict that after this game UW QB Jake Locker starts showing up on a few Heisman ballots with a strong performance Saturday. USC looks beat up and worn out after last Saturday night at Ohio State. Matt Barkley at possibly 50% with the bruised shoulder? Even Taylor Mays has a leg injury, and while he'll play, who knows what will happen? The Huskies will have to play the perfect game, and if they get some major breaks in the process, they will find a way to beat the Trojans.
UW does it, 26-23 over USC

...and this is coming from an alum from a cross state rival Washington State (who are officially awful this season)

Great thoughts, again. Yeah, Charlie Weis may be history, as much as I like Jimmy Clausen. And as for SC, Washington, Cal, and UCLA all look serious. SC looked sluggish against Ohio State, like they never came out of their first quarter doldrums (which they always seem to have), except for the two drives. But they are going to improve as they go, Barkley will gain confidence, it will become a team. And you have to admit - they came from behind to win Saturday, no matter how lackluster they looked earlier.

David,

You have always said that UCLA football fans do not really care about their team. They just hate USC. So I thought of you a while back when I saw a personalized licence plate "H8 USC".

Bill Walsh - Ronnie Lott - with such erudition, who can argue with ANY of your above ramblings? Boffo Boxoffice boy. And San Jose State! Man, Bill Walsh twice in one musing. I'd prolly pay real money to be at one of your Tailgaters. Let the games begin.

I had no idea you were a football fan, let alone a Trojan! I always liked you, but this really changes things.

I feel it too, David, and can't wait to see what USC has this year. You've pretty much nailed it with the issue being Barkley. But after all, if Sanchez were back, they'd pretty much be requiring USC to play in the NFL. At least this gives the other 11 on the field a fighting chance. I wouldn't call this a rebuilding year, but SC is unlikely to go 11-0 with a Freshman QB. Here we go . . .
